Accessibility

The standard we build to

We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 at Level AA, and we treat that as a floor rather than a finish line. We are committed to making this site usable for everyone, consistent with the goals of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

What is in place

• Contrast. Body text sits at roughly 16:1 against the page. Secondary text is at least 5:1. The primary call to action — dark type on the wheat yellow — is about 11.7:1, well above the 4.5:1 the standard requires and above the 7:1 we set ourselves for primary actions.
• Keyboard. Every control is reachable and operable with a keyboard alone. A skip link is the first focusable element on every page. Focus is always visible, with a wheat outline offset from the element so it is never clipped.
• Structure. One h1 per page, headings in order, landmarks on header, nav, main and footer, and labelled navigation regions.
• Forms. Every input has a visible persistent label, not a placeholder standing in for one. Errors are announced, described in words, and tied to the field they belong to.
• Images. Product photography carries descriptive alternative text. Decorative imagery is marked as decorative so screen readers skip it rather than reading filenames.
• Tables. Size and specification tables use real table markup with scoped headers and captions, so they can be navigated cell by cell.
• Zoom and reflow. The layout works to 400% zoom and down to a 320 pixel viewport without horizontal scrolling. Text sizes are relative.

Motion and pointer

• The home page carousel has a visible pause control and dot controls, moves no faster than one frame every 6.5 seconds, and never moves at all if your system asks for reduced motion — it holds on the first frame.
• The opening screen appears once per session, can be dismissed with Escape or a click, and is disabled entirely under reduced motion.
• The custom pointer ring only exists for a fine pointer with motion allowed. On a touch screen, or with reduced motion set, the system cursor is used unchanged. It never replaces or obscures the keyboard focus indicator.
• The scrolling notice bar at the top of the page stops under reduced motion, and it is hidden from screen readers because its content is repeated in the footer.

Known gaps

Being honest about the things we have not solved:

• Colour swatches are identified by name in their accessible label, but the visual swatch alone does not convey the name — you need the label read out or the tooltip.
• The Pack Planner result updates without an announcement region, so a screen reader user has to navigate to the result rather than being told it changed. This is on our list.
• Long specification tables scroll horizontally on a narrow screen. The scroll container is keyboard reachable, but a very small screen still means side-to-side movement.
